Call Me, Beep Me

This week’s discussion topic? Classroom learning vs. other forms of learning—aka the age-old debate: school, work, or social life—who wore it best?

Now the first thing that popped into my head? Instant messaging. And I know what you're thinking:
Really, girl? That’s all you got?
And to that I say—yes. Yes it is.

While my classmates were out here dropping philosophical bombs and making me nod like “ooooh they’re onto something,” I stayed true to my roots and went basic. Because sometimes, we need the simple things to connect the dots—and what’s more universal than instant messaging?

Let’s break it down:

  • School: Students are definitely DM’ing each other during class. Maybe it's a group project update... or maybe it’s a snarky comment about the teacher's third “um” in two minutes. Either way—messaging is happening.

  • Work: My coworker is pinging Jeff again to remind him about the 2pm meeting that he’s been ghosting like a bad date.

  • Social: And me? I’m messaging my bestie about the latest Love Island TikTok edit that I had on a loop for 15 minutes. Priorities, right?

Now here’s where it gets interesting: each space has its own vibe—and its own rules.
In class? Little Timmy better watch out, because that school-issued Chromebook is locked down tighter than my last situationship. Monitoring software is watching his every move.
At work? Our messaging is encrypted, secure, and very much "Big Brother is watching" because hello—client confidentiality.
And socially? Oh baby, it’s the Wild West. It’s just me, my chaotic thumbs, and my FBI agent silently judging every typo and questionable meme I send.

So yeah, instant messaging might not be flashy, but it’s everywhere—and it shows how communication morphs based on context. Whether it’s academic, professional, or personal, we’re all typing, reacting, and (let’s be honest) occasionally procrastinating in real time.

Moral of the story? Sometimes the most “basic” example is also the most real. Just like me.

What goes through my head watching some of these Tik Tok edits.
